The WCW Thread

Post by Mattxx87 »

Now, late last year I never would have thought a thread like this would exist on here but I feel with the release of the WWE Network, we mind as well have it for thoughts, news on new WCW DVDs and compilations, reviews, and any other discussions related to WCW PPVs and shows on the WWE Network or elsewise.

I will be reviewing old episodes of WCW Saturday Night shortly. These aren't on the WWE Network (yet), but from my private collection. Why? Because! Norman Smiley! Disorderly Conduct! Meng!

WCW Saturday Night
May 15th, 1999

Tenay opens the show discussing last Sunday's Slamboree results, including new World, TV, and Tag Team Champions. They also mention that the Steiner Brothers have been reunited but no one knows what their intentions are, whether they will go after singles titles or tag team titles

1) Billy Kidman and Rey Mysterio Jr vs Disorderly Conduct

Mysterio Jr is recognized as the current Cruiserweight Champion and is beaten down by Tough Tom early on. Kidman and Mysterio with a unique electric chair/Thesz Press combo, but Disorderly Conduct quickly gains an advantage isolating Mysterio for over five minutes. Mysterio is beaten down with a running powerslam, lariats, boots, and double teams. Mysterio barely gets the hot tag as the crowd erupts. The former tag champs with double team work to Mike and Tom, followed by a double tornado bulldog from Kidman. Mysterio and Tom to the outside, BK Bomb followed by the Shooting Star Press wins it for Kidman and Mysterio around 7:00!

2) Johnny Swinger vs Adrian Byrd

Hudson and Tenay recap a hardcore brawl between Bam Bam Bigelow and Brian Knobs from Slamboree as the match starts. Back and forth with basic exchanges but Byrd with an early advantage. Swinger rocking Brutus Beekcake black and white pants. That's the most interesting part of this match. Swinger sleeper reversed into a jawbreaker. Swinger with a sidewalk slam followed by a somersault slingshot legdrop wins it around 4:00!

3) Al Green vs Damien

Tenay and Hudson tell us that it's official that Randy Savage has been reinstated in WCW after Gorgeous George defeated "Lil' Naitch" Charles Robinson at Slamboree. Apparently every match is going to discuss a match at Slamboree. Scott Hudson said he would volunteer to take a hurricanrana from Gorgeous George. Jerry Lawler is jealous of how subtle that was. Damien with a suicide somersault to the outside! Both guys exchange big moves. Damien strikes quickly throughout the match. Gorilla press slam from Green! Running powerslam! Green tries a splash but eats boot. Damien with a lariat! Damien misses a top rope senton. Green with a diving shoulderblock and pins Damien around 3:30! Very stiff match. Damien looked surprisingly good.

4) Fit Finlay vs Kendall Windham

Finlay is introduced as one of the newest members of the hardcore division, and that he loves to fight. Windham towers over Finlay. Windham powers Finlay over with a big boot, and a leaping running shoulder in the corner! Finlay with signature european uppercuts. Tenay reminds us that Kendall is the younger brother of Barry Windham. The main event is announced as Stevie Ray against Curt Hennig. Both men exchange big blows again. Windham reverses an irish whip with a spinning neckbreaker. Finlay dives into the turnbuckle post and falls to the outside after missing a headbutt! On the outside, Windham into the post. In the ring, shortarm clothesline followed by the Tombstone piledriver by Finlay for the win around 4:00!

Backstage, Stevie Ray is backstage with Mene Gene discussing his main event match. Bootie. Stevie Ray can move like a cat, and he's not sure why anyone calls Curt Hennig great. Stevie Ray eats suckers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

5) David Flair vs Frankie Lancaster

Scott Hudson is discussing that David Flair is the son of Ric Flair and that Flair has been putting his son in no win situations, including a match against Meng. Just as soon as the match started, referee Charles Robinson disqualifies Lancaster and awards the match to David Flair around the 20-second mark.

After a return from a commercial, we are told that Eric Bischoff returned to WCW at Slamboree! We were told Piper and Ric Flair battled for the Presidency of WCW at Slamboree, and Flair originally won, but Bischoff returned and reversed the decision, giving Piper the win and the position of President! We were told Kevin Nash defeated DDP for the World Heavyweight Championship when Savage interfered for Nash, but Bischoff restarted the match, when Nash won with the Jackknife Powerbomb!

6) Brian Adams (w/ Horace Hogan) vs Erik Watts

Brian Adams is jacked up, and Erik Watts is really tall. Adams is a member of the nWo. I almost typed Crush Adams with a hard clothesline which spins Watts inside out! Backbreaker across the knee! Watts fights back and knows Adams on the ropes with a dropkick as Adams falls outside. Adams reverses a suplex into a suplex of his own and drops his lanky opponent stomach first across the top rope! Brian Adams with a gorilla press which he makes look way too esy into a gutbuster! Watts with a bulldog! Adams misses a clothesline and Watts with a HUGE crossbody! Watts with a hard clothesline and tries another, but Adams reverses into a stiff spinebuster! Adams with an awful looking spike piledriver, dropping Watts entire weight down on his head. So bad. Adams wins it around 5:00. If I never saw these two wrestle again I'd be okay with that.

7) Meng vs Dale Torborg

Nothing Torborg does affects Meng early on. Tenay tells us Torborg used to be a baseball prospect, having played minor league baseball for seven years. Meng bashes Torborg's head in to the mat over and over! Torborg tries to chop to an advantage, but Meng rips Torborg down by the hair. Meng with a double underhook suplex!! Meng beats down Torborg on the mat. Torborg fights back with dropkicks that put Meng down! Tongan Death Grip out of no where for the pin in less than 4 mins. Completely one sided. Hudson tells us Meng always wins on Saturday Night

8) Bull Payne vs Barry Darsow

Does every developmental star get assigned a biker gimmick? Bull Payne looks greasy with leather and spikes, and a bald head. The longtime veteran Barry Darsow is his opponent. Another heel/heel match as both men antagonize the fans. Tenay tells us that Bret Hart made his return to WCW and attacked Goldberg with a steel chair, when the Steiner Brothers ran in to the ring and also assaulted Sting and Goldberg. Tenay says this match will be two guys looking to gain an advantage. The Professor everyone! Payne with some innovative moves. Darsow throws Payne over the top! Both men brawl on the outside and Payne gets sent into the steps! In the ring, Darsow locks on a standing elbowlock and Payne taps out around 4:00. The hell was that? Hudson tells us Payne can't take it anymore. He was in the hold for barely ten seconds, and was in control most of the match. The submission hold looks really dumb.

Need another break. Two hours of this is too much to handle.

Loved WCW so much.

Eddie vs. Rey Mysterio from HH '97 is one of my top 3 matches ever.

I wish more indies guys took tips from this match on how and when to use high spots. They were so perfectly placed and timed in this match.

I loved some of WCW. Yeah even the bad stuff was sometimes good in a trainwreck sort of way but sadly it drove them out of business in the end.

Oooh. You're doing the era when Saturday night was dominated by the trainees/undercard guys. Arguably the worst WCW Sat programming ever. Even I couldn't handle it. If you're really suffering, go further back in the Wayback Machine to see some decent stuff.

I used to review 1997 RAW for another forum I was on, and I hated Crush then, and I still hate him now. If there wasn't ever a list of worst workers that had lengthy careers and got significant pushes, Brian Adams HAS to be in the top...3. Easily. He was balls to the wall stiff, dangerous, had no fluid motion or consistency. All he did was go through the motions, backbreaker, big boot, spinebuster. And he was very cumbersome in the ring, often tripping over his own two feet. His quality of selling involved laying on the mat like a plank of wood.

Marcus Bagwell, 44, is now working as a high priced gigolo for a company called Cowboys4Angels. His official job title is as an escort for women. It was claimed Bagwell is the second most popular man working for the company, with a going rate of $800 for two hours, $1,550 for four hours and $3,000 for an overnight visit. Weekends are $8,000 and a full week is $25,000.

Though that is a very interesting topic. Where are they now? I'd love to see what certain guys are doing. The ones that aren't dead.

If it's good enough for DLR, then it should be good enough for anyone. :)

Who remembers these?

Only WCW would get in to the vibrator market while trying to market to children.

I think WCW's worst year was 1999.

Cases in point:

Fingerpoke Of Doom
Master P
Lenny & Lodi as a gay duo
Rey & Psicosis unmask
Nash & Page put themselves over as world champions
Sting's heel turn
Half assed hardcore matches
Ric Flair as on air pres
David Flair as US champion
Berlyn
Oklahoma
Killing the TV title
Raven walks out
Jericho & Big Show go to vince
Sandman & Whipwreck go back to ECW
Bill Bush takes over after Bischoff is benched
Powers That Be

Should be this year's celebrity inductee for the hometown pop and ticket sales.

Not WCW, but it's predecessor. I just watched Starrcade '83. Not exactly an event that holds up to today, but it isn't a bad watch, and for historical significance and a red hot crowd this is a fun show.

The Assassins vs. McGraw & Jones *1/4

Weaver & McGhee vs. Sullivan & Lewin *

Abdullah the Butcher vs. Carlos Colon 1/2*

McDaniel & Youngblood vs. Slater & Orton ***

Charlie Brown vs. Great Kabuki *

Roddy Piper vs. Greg Valentine ***1/4

Brisco Brothers vs. Steamboat & Youngblood ***

Harley Race vs. Ric Flair ***1/2

So yeah, for its time this was a brilliant event. There are four matches here that hold up to today as good matches, and all four of them are better than any of WWF's first three PPVs that I've watched (WM, WC & WM II).

Maybe became I haven't seen Piper/Valentine since I was a kid, but, I remember it being better than that. They beat the absolute crap out of each other. It was one of those matches, if not THE match, that sold the VHS tapes of Starrcade back then. Doesn't mean it was a five star gem, and sometimes the most memorable match of an event isn't as good as memory serves, but, it's legacy is something special

Starrcade 1983's 3 main events are all good shit that bring something different to the table, incompetent guest reffing notwithstanding.

Yeah, the reffing in the main event was horrible.

Piper and Valentine was heavy hitting and hardcore, and the blood definitely added to it, but I've never really been a fan of chain matches. I guess I just didn't feel it too much, although it was still a very good match for its time and I enjoyed it.
