Day 11 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_KYOriQf_o

Not a very noteworthy day outside of Hakuho being the sole leader now after Harumafuji lost his first bout of the basho. Also Kisenosato is out, but that's not really a surprise frankly.

Day 12 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71XBHR1n8Wo
Day 13 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys4aGnkSQgE

Well, it sure seems like Hakuho is winning this one with a two-win lead over Harumafuji, Terunofuji and Takayasu with two days left.

Day 14 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWmsf9uc2AE&t=606s

After a year of nothing for him, Hakuho won this basho with still one day to go. He could go zensho (15-0) if he beats Harumafuji tomorrow.
Tamawashi once again eating shit after some terrible MINDGAMES with my boy Tochinoshin.

Day 15 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wej7T3Nw1T8&t=605s

Zensho yusho for Hakuho with Terunofuji and Tochinoshin of all people as runner-ups. Overall, a pretty eh basho that felt quite pedestrian I guess.

Not a ton to say about the promotions/demotions either. Takayasu will be promoted to ozeki, Kotoshogiku might keep a sanyaku spot and only dropped down to komusubi with Mitakeumi climbing up to sekiwake, and the top maegashira spots will be filled with guys who did 10+ wins this basho (Shodai, Hokutofuji, Takakeisho, Tochinoshin, Ura and Onosho at around M4/M5).

Banzuke for Nagoya basho :

Yokozuna
Hakuho - Harumafuji
Kisenosato - Kakuryu

Ozeki
Terunofuji - Goeido
Takayasu

Sekiwake
Tamawashi - Mitakeumi

Komusubi
Yoshikaze - Kotoshogiku

Maegashira
Shodai M1 Takakeisho
Tochinoshin M2 Hokutofuji
Ikioi M3 Endo
Ura M4 Kagayaki
Chiyoshoma M5 Tochiozan
Ichinojo M6 Onosho
Takanoiwa M7 Daieisho
Aoiyama M8 Ishiura
Tokushoryu M9 Okinoumi
Chiyotairyu M10 Shohozan
Chiyonokuni M11 Daishomaru
Arawashi M12 Takekaze
Takarafuji M13 Sokokurai
Sadanoumi M14 Kotoyuki
Nishikigi M15 Chiyomaru
Gagamaru M16

Main "storylines" coming in :
  • How healthy Kisenosato and Kakuryu are after dropping out of the last basho?
  • Terunofuji in what seems to be a yokozuna run, but he most likely has to win the basho to earn a promotion.
  • How Takayasu will fare for his first basho as an ozeki?
  • Can Kotoshogiku keep a sanyaku spot or will he drop down even further?
  • Quite a few rikishi at their highest rank ever in the top maegashira spots. Could we have another basho with the top maegashira shitting the bed or will they step up to the plate?

Day 1 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kt0Ek0AtPM

Well, that was quite the first day and already more intriguing than the entire previous basho.
Five out of the seven Y-O ate shit today. Gotta admire old man Yoshikaze winning his fight to the death against Harumafuji.

Back to our "storylines" :

How healthy Kisenosato and Kakuryu are after dropping out of the last basho?
Kakuryu looked pretty damn good, Kisenosato not so much.

Terunofuji in what seems to be a yokozuna run, but he most likely has to win the basho to earn a promotion.
A bad start, but we'll see.

How Takayasu will fare for his first basho as an ozeki?
Same.

Can Kotoshogiku keep a sanyaku spot or will he drop down even further?
He's gonna have a rough first week facing all of the top guys, so a 2-5/3-4 wouldn't be the end of the world before the second week with "easier" opponents. Also he was against Hakuho who he only beat five times out of 57.

Quite a few rikishi at their highest rank ever in the top maegashira spots. Could we have another basho with the top maegashira shitting the bed or will they step up to the plate?
So far so good as only Kagayaki lost out of the six maegashira at their highest rank (Takakeisho at M1, Hokutofuji at M2, Ura/Kagayaki at M4, Onosho at M6 and Ishiura at M8).

Day 2 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vghk2P7_qkM

A more standard day, although we still have two ozeki (Goeido and Terunofuji) and one yokozuna (Harumafuji) without a win.

Day 3 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVFTu8kPCGE

Not a lot to say today. Five rikishi are still undefeated.

Day 4 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm_ZJEbXXYQ

Well Kakuryu is out, that didn't take long unfortunately.
Gotta love Hakuho going full-on cocky heel complete with "come at me bro" at Takakeisho, then just dispatching him WITH DA GREATEST OF EASE.
Four rikishi are still undefeated (Onosho lost today).

Day 5 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMb9AcO4B5U

Eh, not a very noteworthy day. Hakuho and Aioyama are still undefeated with seven rikishi following them at 4-1.

Let's go back to our storylines :

How healthy Kisenosato and Kakuryu are after dropping out of the last basho?
Well, Kakuryu is out with another injury and Kisenosato is only 2-3, so not well at all.

Terunofuji in what seems to be a yokozuna run, but he most likely has to win the basho to earn a promotion.
He's 1-4 and looks horrendous. Wouldn't be shocked to see him drop out quickly in the next few days.

How Takayasu will fare for his first basho as an ozeki?
He's 4-1 now and seems to be the only real threat to Hakuho this basho.

Can Kotoshogiku keep a sanyaku spot or will he drop down even further?
Only 1-4, but he's facing his old nemesis Kisenosato tomorrow so who knows.

Quite a few rikishi at their highest rank ever in the top maegashira spots. Could we have another basho with the top maegashira shitting the bed or will they step up to the plate?
Ura and Onosho are 4-1, Hokutofuji is 3-2, Kagayaki and Ishiura are 2-3 and Takakeisho is only 1-4.

Day 6 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YI5r67T0loo

To the surprise of no one, both Kisenosato and Terunofuji dropped out today.
Some solid action, but again not a whole lot to say overall.
Aoiyama and Hakuho still undefeated with five rikishi at 5-1.

More of the same once again. Same two guys on top with only Takayasu at 6-1 now.

Day 10 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4-9BtTqj-E

Some solid bouts today, but no changes at all on top. Hakuho still undefeated at 10-0, followed by Aoiyama at 9-1, then three rikishi at 8-2.

Back to what's left of our storylines :

How Takayasu will fare for his first basho as an ozeki?
He's 8-2 and got his kachi-koshi today, so he's doing perfectly fine.

Can Kotoshogiku keep a sanyaku spot or will he drop down even further?
Only 4-6, but he's done with the top guys so he can still get his KK.

Quite a few rikishi at their highest rank ever in the top maegashira spots. Could we have another basho with the top maegashira shitting the bed or will they step up to the plate?
Onosho is doing remarkably well with 8-2, Ura is at 6-4 and scored his first kinboshi against Harumafuji, Hokutofuji and Ishiura are in the middle at 5-5, Kagayaki is in danger with a 3-7, and finally Takakeisho went make-koshi today with an 2-8 so far.

Day 11 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8J7raAV0Tw

Well that was... different with Hakuho finally losing, but of course no one takes advantage of that (Onosho I guess). Hakuho still in the lead with 10-1, followed by the completely random duo of Aoiyama and Onosho at 9-2, then five rikishi at 8-3.

Day 12 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2vXPqVih8o

Same old same old in this basho. It's pretty hard to buy Aoiyama as this big threat to Hakuho, but that's all we have left at this point. Oh, and Hakuho will become the rikishi with the most wins ever with the next W, so that's something to look forward to at least.

Day 13 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8qqju01ocQ

My boy Osunaraashi down in juryo fooled in glorious fashion by an henka.
What the hell was that call in the Aoiyama match? He clearly touched the outside first.
And here's win #1048 for Hakuho, now the rikishi with the most wins ever.
Hakuho still on top at 12-1, Aoiyama at 11-2, then Harumafuji and Tochiozan at 10-3.

Day 14 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7Ii4ZifBzM

It will be between Hakuho and Aoiyama. He has to win against Yoshikaze while Hakuho must lose to Harumafuji, only then he'll get a playoff bout against Hakuho for the yusho, so that's a lot of ifs for Aoiyama.
Kotoshogiku is make-koshi and will join the maegashira ranks for the first time in almost seven years, although I wouldn't be surprised to see him retire.

Day 15 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJA2FOr9nNY

No miracle run for Aoiyama despite an impressive 13-2, but Hakuho is pretty much unstoppable when he's fit.
Lazy piece of shit Ichinojo got his make-koshi and that makes me happy.

Let's go back one last time to our storylines there :

How Takayasu will fare for his first basho as an ozeki?
Finished 9-6 which isn't amazing, but he's the only ozeki with a winning record so there's that at least.

Can Kotoshogiku keep a sanyaku spot or will he drop down even further?
Almost there with a 7-8, but he'll drop down to the maegashira ranks for Aki. He should be M1 or M2, unless of course he decides to retire.

Quite a few rikishi at their highest rank ever in the top maegashira spots. Could we have another basho with the top maegashira shitting the bed or will they step up to the plate?
Takakeisho -> 5-10 at M1, should drop down to M4 or M5.
Hokutofuji -> 8-7 at M2, should stay at this rank or maybe move up to M1.
Ura -> 7-8 at M4, probably M5 next basho.
Kagayaki -> 5-10 at M4, I'd say M8 or M9.
Onosho -> 10-5 at M6, should move up to M3.
Ishiura -> 7-8 at M8, small drop to M9 or M10

Predictions for Aki

Yokozuna
Hakuho
Harumafuji
Kisenosato
Kakuryu

Ozeki
Takayasu
Goeido (kadoban, must do 8-7 to keep the rank)
Terunofuji (also kadoban)

Sekiwake
Mitakeumi
Yoshikaze

Komusubi
Tamawashi
Tochiozan

This is particularly tricky though because you have a few rikishi with good records who should earn a sanyaku spot (Tochinoshin, Tochiozan, Aoiyama). Even with 7-8 at S1E, I wouldn't be shocked to see Tamawashi back in the maegashira ranks with Aoiyama or Tochinoshin moving up to komusubi instead and the other one at M1E. We'll see.

Demoted to juryo
Gagamaru
Kotoyuki
Sokokurai
Tokushoryu

Promoted from juryo
Kaisei
Myogiryu
Yutakayama
Asanoyama
