Retro ROH Discussion: Wrestling Omakase #9 "Growing Up ROH"

Post by Xias »

Hi there,

First of all, if any of you were around back in the old ROH forum days, what's up? I was very active back in the day and enjoyed that time a lot.

In a similarly nostalgic vein, last night I recorded an episode of my podcast Wrestling Omakase (on the VOW podcast network) with JR Goldberg (@wrestlingbubble on Twitter) all about old-school ROH. It's 2 hours and 25 minutes on the 2003-2008 era when both of us were attending a ton of ROH shows, talking everything from personal memories and moments to why we think that era of Ring of Honor was so appealing and how it compares to modern wrestling (both ROH & other promotions as well). I think it's a fascinating conversation (though obviously I'm biased) and I registered here to share it because I thought some of you might enjoy it. Thanks in advance if you give us a shot! Here's the episode link: https://audioboom.com/posts/6255891-wre ... r-goldberg.

Insane for your first live event to be WM10, and first live ROH event to be the greatest match in company history.

Welcome (back), Xias. Was never a poster on the old forum, but I do remember usernames like Tree and Thomas Bobo. As a semi-frequent listener of Omakase, I thought this episode was more veering than usual. Even as someone that is comfortable with the history of the company, I found myself losing the thread. Maybe some show notes would help pare back? Or maybe it’s just the kind of casual recording you were looking for, not trying to make each episode a product ‘primer’.

As a humble request, I’d love to hear a podcast about wrestling music videos, especially from TheMVZone (whose history is greatly linked to the ROH fanbase). Omakase is the perfect show to tackle that, I think.

Yeah, I was definitely worried by the end that it might be a little harder to follow than most of our other episodes. I think JR & I didn't really want a strong structure on the episode, we kind of wanted it to just be an open discussion, but listening back we did kind of jump all over, it's a fair critique. Next time we do another classic ROH episode (and there almost certainly will be a next time) I think we'll try to stick to a more chronological format.

This is a cool idea I've honestly never thought of before, but of course for any Omakase topic I need a guest or two to go along with it too. If you know anyone who you think would be good for this, definitely send them my way!

I'm not in the community, so I can only offer some leads. As I'm writing this publicly, I want to be clear that this in no way obligates you follow all the way through in production.

This is the latest board for TheMVZone: http://mvzone.proboards.com/

This is a YouTube account (perhaps unofficial) of the community, which has uploaded many of the videos from throughout its decade-plus history: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheMVZVideoVault

And another account on vimeo: https://vimeo.com/user8138851

Some personal favorites of mine:
Mr. Perfect tribute by Awesome Dude https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-h4MMZjhB-E
Misawa/Kawada tribute by ddevil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSXRzKjupUk
Bryan Danielson tribute by th3rd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNrwXnTgxtw
Generation Next/Embassy tribute by Her69Eyes https://vimeo.com/38135655

For a lot of young people like myself at the time, this was a means of access to companies that had difficult barriers to entry.

I'll send you a private message of some names you can possibly contact.

Oh, and former user here thatwrestlingshow was immense as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ9ETYFLdAk

I've just finished the podcast. And well, while it was entertaining and it wasn't boring, I didn't like it as an ROH Podcast. It is such and intesting podcast, but I wouldn't call it a Retro ROH podcast at all. It was a fun and open conversation, yeah, but, IMO, you both talked about a lot too many things, changing the topic every 5-10 minutes for then going back to the previous topic in another 10 minutes. Plus, I would say you Told a lot of non-roh things and stories.

Did I enjoy the podcast? Yes, you both talk really well and the topics are interestings if you are a wrestling fan, Would I recommend this as a great old-school ROH podcast? No, bc it was more of a conversation between two friends that met each other with ROH, but in the podcast, at least that how I feel, ROH was the "excuse" to récord this. I''m sure you enjoyed it a lot, but it's difficult to follow and enjoy it, specially if you are expecting a full old-school ROH podcast.

Good work, hope you don't get angry with this comment bc I don't want to sound rude, I just post this bc I feel you both could do a great Classic ROH podcast.
