ROH is currently definitely doing everything right in terms of marketing (Dave had some extremely interesting comments on this in this week's Observer). It's just the actual product- and especially the storytelling- that is suffering.
I certainly think mixing it up with a few episodes like that would be a great idea even just a full episode of one match now and again would be great, just run one on the FITE APP without any add breaks. I certainly think getting back that "we are about the wrestling" but showing it alot more than they may do now.

Do you mind elaberating on what Dave had to say, I haven't been able to see anything he had to say, obviously you can direct to subscribe and you have every right to do so.

I'll post the entirety of what I thought was relevant, as I think it will stir some interesting discussion:
Dave Meltzer in the October 23, 2017 WON wrote: There’s no arguing that ROH is the strongest it has ever been. And the merchandise lines for the Bullet Club members have been such that it only seems like the tickets are being sold more for meet and greets, since people wait in line for hours for photos, as the matches themselves are secondary. What that means is uncharted because it’s really never been like that in wrestling.

Indeed, for Global Wars, while most of the matches were good, it was clearly not the lure of the matches themselves, but the idea of the event that was the draw. It was the most big-time ROH has ever felt as far as this iPPV went, with improvements in production and micing the crowd.

The wrestling was good, but there was a lot of shtick, really more than any ROH major show I’ve seen. It’s clear that the talent is more over as stars, meaning they can get away with doing less, and they have go-to- spots that aren’t going to break down their bodies like a break-neck attempt to do the best pro wrestling match possible will do.

Omega, without the belt itself, retained the U.S. title in the main event beating Yoshi-Hashi. A lot of people complained ahead of time that this was the wrong opponent, and well, it was. Yoshi-Hashi never turned it in like someone in his position should have. Omega didn’t treat this with the urgency of a normal big match. It’s too bad in a sense, because if the Juice Robinson match would have taken place on this show, with this hot of a crowd, it would have not only torn the house down, but made Robinson into a star in Chicago, where he’s from, and elevated his name to the hardcore audience. But it took place in Kobe instead.

Still, the main event ended up being really good, strangely, because of all the outside interference among Bullet Club and Chaos members, as well as Flip Gordon and Chuck Taylor, as opposed to having to overcome it.

The show seemed to have had a purpose of a few things. One is trying to position themselves as the hot up-and-coming alternative to WWE, the position ECW tried to position itself in the late 90s. That does lead to stronger reactions and fan loyalty to the brand, but the long-term of that mentality is tougher. The other purpose of the show seemed to be to get new talent, in particular Adam Page, Shane Taylor, Jonathan Gresham and Gordon over, with various degrees of success. In the case of Gordon, who lost to Will Ospreay in the show-stealing match, he came across like a guy who is probably two years away from superstardom. His athletic ability is off the charts and just needs experience and some work on connecting with the crowd, and he’s very much like Ospreay himself was not that many years ago.

The anti-WWE movement was clear, from the start of the show with Cody, as the brand champion, pushing the company’s current success and taking shots at WWE’s face, Roman Reigns. There were all kinds of teases about what could and couldn’t be said regarding “Too sweet,” there were “cease and desist” signs and gimmicks all over the place. There were “F*** the Revival” chants at several points during the show. And the show ended with Jimmy Jacobs, recently fired by WWE, making a cameo by coming out and shooting a photo of the Bullet Club celebration.

It’s good marketing. From a WWE standpoint, the attempt to bully them into quieting down clearly backfired and made them bigger stars. The firing of Jacobs probably did the same. Reigns actually responded just hours before the show to a comment by Cody that gave them ammo for the opening segment. If this encourages WWE to go after more talent, that would at least be in the talents best interest.

The real question that can’t be answered regards Omega’s staying power. When he comes back to markets a second time, will there be a similar run on tickets? And there is no way of knowing that. And, at least in theory, if Omega does get a run as IWGP champion, which would make sense to happen in 2018, will that increase his drawing power or will that title not matter. And some of that is New Japan, as New Japan really should be planning a major event in 2018 in the U.S. with Tetsuya Naito vs. Omega, before G-1, in a major arena and make people think that’s the title switch, to really gauge exactly what their limits in the market are.

ROH Global Wars: Chicago (10/15/2017)- Chicago, IL

CODY RHODES PROMO- He cut a shoot promo on Roman Reigns because of a Tweet that Roman Tweeted. Who could possibly care? Bullet Club/ROH are the ones who have been taking shots at WWE so it's Bullet Club/ROH that are going to come off as the jerks here, almost no matter what anyone from WWE does. Have we learned nothing from Cookie-Gate (or any of TNA’s other many mistakes, for that matter)? But if, for some reason, we must do this, why are we sending Cody, who always acts and wrestles like a complete and total heel do this big babyface promo?

CODY RHODES SEGMENT THAT ISN’T POINTLESS AND STUPID- good
Cody says he doesn’t want to waste anyone’s time (there’s a lie if I’ve ever heard one) so he is now going to pick one lucky fan to come into the ring and kiss his ring. He find the biggest dork possible (read as: “plant”) not just holding a Cody sign and wearing one of Cody’s Bullet Club t-shirts, but even wearing an American Flag ski-mask, because there is nothing that says “this is so clearly an angle” than a fan who happens to be wearing a mask being invited into the ring.
Cody says they’re going to go live on Being The Elite and the fans all cheer and the guy poses with Cody, then takes off his mask to reveal that he’s really Dalton Castle. Dalton gives Cody some suplexes and beats on him for a bit until Cody manages to crawl away. Even better, the fans actually cheered for the heel getting his comeuppance for his attack on Dalton a few months ago that put Dalton out of action. The road to Final Battle begins in earnest.

There appears to be a KUSHIDA cosplayer standing up in the back row of floor seats, right next to aisle. His presence is very distracting.

BEST FRIENDS vs. SILAS YOUNG & BEER CITY BRUISER- 6.75/10
Really good babyfaces vs. heels opener.

HIROMU TAKAHASHI vs. MARTY SCURLL- 6.25/10
Lots of shtick at the beginning here. That KUSHIDA cosplayer is now holding a Darryl. I officially declare him a failure as a cosplayer. Speaking of Darryl, I would greatly appreciate it if the announcers would stop pretending that this stupid f*cking stuffed animal is alive.
Marty picked Darryl up and went to “break” its fingers (claws?). I can get doing this as mind games, but he did it while Hiromu’s back was turned. Then he hit Hiromu with Darryl, right in front of the referee, and yet there was no DQ.
They spent most of the match just kind of alternating between doing stuff and doing shtick, with no attempt at any sort of story to tie it all together. That might have been fine for some other guys in the second match on the card, but this was a match I was really looking forward to and was hoping for some great wrestling.

THE ADDICTION vs. KUSHIDA & CHEESEBURGER- 5.5/10
Remember last year at this very show in this very city when Cheeseburger cleanly pinned Christopher Daniels and Kevin Kelly kept telling us all for months afterwards that it was the biggest win of Cheeseburger’s career? Well here is, seventeen months later, still in the exact same spot in the company he was before the “biggest win of his career.” Hooray for Delirious!
KUSHIDA & Cheeseburger both brought “hoverboards” to the ring. At one point KUSHIDA put it on the top rope and used it to balance on to help him hit a diving crossbody, a la Mat Rats. That made me laugh. Having apparently learned to do his job since yesterday, referee Tod Sinclair then removed the foreign object from the ring. The Addiction pinned Cheeseburger with the Best Meltzer Ever, then tried to put him through a table but they took forever before getting around to trying it so Bully Ray could waddle his way out to make the save and put Kaz through the table instead.
Credit where it’s due: I liked the way they had Bully come out to make the save here and then cut his promo making this segment smoothly flow into the next. Delirious did a good job with this. Also, it lets me make a mean joke about Bully Ray liking Cheeseburgers. I would feel worse about making that joke if he could actually go in the ring, but he has totally failed to do so every time out in ROH so far.

(THE AFOREMENTIONED) BULLY RAY PROMO- Excellent for what it was. Better than it should have been, in fact.
He started off by saying “I wasn’t planning on coming out here and doing that, but you don’t just pull out a table in Chicago.” In other words, he wouldn’t have cared if they were beating the sh*t out of Cheeseburger with a chair or a ladder or whatever. He didn’t come out here to save Cheeseburger because it was the moral thing to do. He did it because putting people through tables is his gimmick and thus, for marketing purposes, he doesn’t want anyone else doing it. Your babyface, ladies and gentlemen: motivated by pure greed.
Bully starts talking about wrestling in this building for ECW and has no qualms whatsoever about saying “ECW,” which makes me suspicious that TNA was being full of sh*t when they would always blame mean old Vince for forbidding them from even saying the name of promotion.
He says that he has to retire due to injuries, with the idea being that the concussion he got in the UK when Jay Briscoe turned on him was the straw that broke the camel’s back. This whole thing is so clearly a work (he even brought a kid into the ring to represent every fan he has ever wrestled in front of and thanked the kid and gave him a piece of “the last table I will ever break”), but the crowd doesn’t seem to realize that because the emotion feels very real so… good for them and good for Bully, I guess.

SEARCH & DESTROY (The Motor City Machine Guns, Jay White, & Jonathan Gresham) vs. BULLET CLUB (The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes, & Adam Page)- 8/10
“F*ck The Revival!” chants from dumb marks in the crowd. The Revival are amazing. I could watch The Revival wrestle American Alpha every single day for the rest of my life and never get bored of it.
Should the referee be making Cody take his ring off before the match starts?
After that one spot with Cody trying to make Gresham kiss his ring, the babyface and heel roles completely switched. At one point, to get heat, Search & Destroy all Too Sweeted each other, which will of course, result in WWE sending ROH a cease and desist letter rather than just Bullet Club, but that is probably exactly what ROH wants.
I could have done without the painfully choreographed opening spot, but aside from that this was a fun, chaotic eight-man tag, with all of the members of Bullet Club aside from Cody getting the chance to play babyface in peril. Lots of action and lots of fun.

THE DAWGS (Rhett Titus & Will Ferrara) vs. BRYAN JOHNSON & JUSTIN PUSSER (w/Miss Jasmine)- 3.75/10
The Dawgs are clearly heels on ROH TV, but Johnson & Pusser (and their valet) were clearly the heels in this match. That was odd. The match was fine for the time it got. I like The Dawgs’ crossbody/gordbuster finisher.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- Jay Briscoe showed up and assaulted Johnson & Pusser. Jay then cut a promo criticizing his brother for focusing on singles matches, which resulted in Mark injuring his elbow two nights ago and being out of action for six to eight weeks. He told Mark to heal up, and said that when he comes back, the Briscoes need to focus on what they do best, which is tag team wrestling- not singles matches and not six-man tags.

SHANE TAYLOR PROMO- he’s apparently doing a mercenary for hire gimmick, but in this case he went about getting his money by lobbying ROH officials to be the one to replace Mark Briscoe in tonight’s scheduled six-man tag. He was pretty decent on the mic here.

JAY LETHAL, KENNY KING, & SHANE TAYLOR vs. SUZUKI-GUN (Minoru Suzuki & the Killer Elite Squad)- 7/10
Suzuki-Gun jumped the bell on their opponents. I should just copy and paste that every time Suzuki-Gun wrestles. They had a very fun six-man tag.

COLT CABANA vs. TORU YANO- no rating, fine comedy match.
They exchanged DVDs before the match as a sign of friendship, but Yano then through Colt’s away because he’s a dick. Comedic roll-ups happened. They went to get the DVDs. Yano sold Cabana’s but Cabana just gave Yano’s away because no one would ever pay for “The Best of Toru Yano.” More stuff happened. It was funny, but I was hoping for more out of a comedy dream match.

WILL OSPREAY vs. FLIP GORDON- 7/10
Ospreay is still acting like a cat. Aside from that, this match was a bunch of spots, but they were fun and exciting and they managed to make me think Gordon had a chance of winning this match, which is a big step forward for Gordon.

IWGP UNITED STATES HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Kenny Omega(c) vs. YOSHI-HASHI- 7/10
Omega got exactly the response you would expect from the guy who drew the house, pretty much single-handedly. But there was one person in the building who didn’t give a sh*t about that. His name was YOSHI-HASHI, and he was here to win the IWGP United States Heavyweight Title (though Omega not having the belt with him made that part a bit awkward). Also awkward was Omega powerbombing YOSHI-HASHI through a table and not getting disqualified.
YOSHI-HASHI and Omega each worked over each other’s head and neck, but the real story of this match was that Omega just couldn’t put YOSHI-HASHI away, no matter what he tried. Even the aforementioned powerbomb through a table followed by Aoi Shoudou didn’t work. After that we got a ref bump and Bullet Club came out to help Omega and this is where things started to go wrong. They were going to nail him with a bunch of Superkicks but Omega told them not to because he wanted to do their dumb “ten boots” spot, so they waited for the rest of Bullet Club to come out and set it up and of course YOSHI-HASHI prevented it… and I guess Bullet Club were now somehow stuck in their positions crowding their feet around the turnbuckle because they all just stayed there. YOSHI-HASHI called for his friends in CHAOS to come out, and they did, bringing their friends Flip Gordon and Chuck Taylor along so they could do the dumb “ten boots” spot instead. Omega put a stop to it and now CHAOS and pals were stuck, too, and both sides were stuck while Omega and YOSHI-HASHI exchanged strikes, waiting for one of them to hit the move. And when the fans started their “TEN BOOTS!” chant again, all of the “stuck” wrestlers were clapping along. Every last bit of this looked completely idiotic.
I don’t know how they expected anyone to believe for even one second that any of these men were stuck. Most of them weren’t even remotely tangled up in each other. But we had to do our f*cking funny spot in the main event because comedy. If Bullet Club had come out after the ref bump and beat YOSHI-HASHI down and then CHAOS came out to make the save and they all brawled to the back a la AJ vs. Suzuki this would have been totally awesome and would have helped the match. Instead, they killed all off the momentum they had built up just so they could do this dumb comedy spot.
Omega eventually got the ten boots on both sides of the ring, which unstuck everyone, then hit the Doctor Wiley Bomb for a nearfall. Then he hit the One-Winged Angel but Yano pulled Sinclair out of the ring. This was not a disqualification, either. Then the Bullet Club and CHAOS guys all took turns hitting their moves on each other until enough Bullet Club members were on the outside for Ospreay to do a dive. The only one that wasn’t was Nick Jackson, who then hit a 450 splash onto Gordon, who had somehow wound up lying on a table at ringside. YOSHI-HASHI and Omega did one final sequence and Omega got the win with the One-Winged Angel.
This was a match that could have been really, really great, but it got totally bogged down by overbooking, to the point where it felt like almost the entirety of the last ten minutes of the match weren’t in any way about the two men in the match or the championship they were fighting over.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- Jimmy Jacobs is back. He took a selfie with Bullet Club.

This was a very odd show from ROH. In the ring, it was good, and we got some important segments, but a lot of the matches didn’t feel like they delivered to the level they should have. The thing that made it particularly weird, though, was that the combination of the work and the booking made this feel not so much like an ROH show as it felt like the booking of a WWE PPV, with undercard matches getting shortchanged on time and a bunch of segments occurring as if this was a TV show, combined with a PWG-like construction of the card and working mentality, gearing towards the fast-paced and funny, but the results being ultimately unimportant. Maybe this is the new normal for ROH, or maybe this is just how they are handling the New Japan joint shows. Either way, it’s not what ROH should be doing on a PPV.

STUPID ANNOUNCER QUOTES:
1. Ian Riccaboni (about Cheeseburger) - “I can’t think of a star the Ring of Honor fans love more.”
Um… the entirety of Bullet Club? Jay Lethal? KUSHIDA? The Briscoes? All of LIJ?

2. Ian Riccaboni kept calling the Search & Destroy vs. Bullet Club match as a “main event” even though it was fourth on the card (and I didn’t see the KISS Demon anywhere).

Thanks for Red, that is very appreciated, I think Meltzer sees the situation how it probably is, I see it as if ROH has the balls, and Sinclair is prepared to back the company financially they can really take this forward and make it something pretty special. If the rumours are true and that there are others in the WWE who do want to move on and depening on the name ROH brining them in would be a very interesting development. People may see it as too much especially if they are out on their own and not affliated with something and ROH should still always have that mentality of making new stars, I see PAC and Aries as those perfect examples of what ROH should be brining that said if Ziggler did leave and he could bring his A game it would be interesting to see his drawing power.

If Omega and ROH want there working relationship to succeed than both can't drop out of the eye of the wrestling world, Kenny even with the belt seems to have lost some focus from New Japan after the G1 (I might be the only one who sees it like that). So this might be the test for Omega especially in America to see how big he could be without that main event focus in New Japan.

Most of this will always come down to Money, if ROH can front the figures needed while still keeping in Black and growing then I can see ROH being a destination for a lot of people. What ROH cannot do is show an unwilingness to change or forward others, seeing Taylor and Gordon come into the story of the Bullet Club is a good thing and more like this needs to be done.

Also side note surprised on your review of Scurll/Takahashi I really enjoyed that match.

I don't want Ziggler under any circumstances. He's an embarrassment as a character, he sucks in the ring, his comedy is awful, his politics are awful.

I don't understand why anyone would want to see him do anything. He's a sad joke.

I'm willing to give Ziggler the benefit of the doubt for a one or two shot to start, were he to become available. Sometimes these dropouts can bring gold, like Cody who despite only being a solid hand in the ring has done very well on promotion aspects. Other times, it's Bull James and they drop out after one shot too many.

Ziggler's proven himself enough of a good hand when he clearly doesn't care, so I'm interested to see what he does when properly motivated. He could be another Beretta or Juice, or he could end up as a Ryback or Swagger. But the gate for at least trying is worth enough to give it a shot.

Now? He's pretty much worthless. But whenever his contract was coming due the last time(2015, I think?), there was a lot of talk that he was a guy who could leave WWE for TNA or ROH and run with the ball and really move numbers.

I agree with you about Omega having lost focus. He and Okada should have main evented KOPW. I don't understand how they could have done anything else after a draw at the PPV and then Omega pinning Okada in the G1.

Omega pinned Okada, but since Omega is champ, he has to defend his Title and cannot challenge. That's how NJ works with the G1's pins.

Plus, the plan was having Okada vs Naito at WK, if Okada faced Omega at KOPW, Okada had to win and that would have been a 2-1-1 registrer. NJ want to make special the next match between them with an Omega's victory

You're not wrong in theory, but in practice, New Japan hasn't operated that way. Okada didn't defend his belt on the Destruction Tour and isn't defending it at Power Struggle even though Omega (and even Ishii going back to last year) has an outstanding pin on him. Omega didn't defend his belt at KOPW and isn't defending it at Power Struggle even though Elgin has an outstanding pin over him, and same with Naito not defending his G1 briefcase against Fale despite not having had any defenses at Destruction or Power Struggle. And don't even get me started on the NEVER belt.

As for Okada and Omega's program, if you're not planning on finishing the program this year, they shouldn't have done a draw at Dominion and certainly shouldn't have had Omega pin Naito in the G1 (off the top of my head, swapping Omega to Block A for Goto but give him the win over Fale rather than Goto's loss and give Suzuki the win against Goto rather than the loss he suffered to Omega, them change Suzuki's draw with Okada to a win and let Suzuki beat Yano so you're finals are Naito over Suzuki, with Suzuki being able to drop the NEVER belt to Elgin before going to ROH to lose to Cody, getting rebuilt at KOPW and on the ROH tour to challenge Okada at Power Struggle, and putting Omega in a spot where he can lose to Ibushi in the G1 to set them up for a US Title match at the Tokyo Dome). The point is that if you weren't going to have Omega be the one to take the belt from Okada and it wasn't going to happen this year, then don't book things (like a Broadway in a title match in the main event of a major PPV then Omega pinning Okada clean in a non-title match) that should logically lead to that match happening and then not do the match.

Buffalo was a good show, but at points the video quality on the stream was absurdly bad. I'm glad I watched the other three shows on the tour live, because this is god damn ridiculous:

This looks like it was recorded on a flip phone camera, transferred to VHS, and then run through a dishwasher.

It's frankly a joke that this keeps happening.

They should improve this, bc the other three shows were streamed with Ustream server and they were in Full HD.

Btw, id the Buffalo show worth a watch? Better than Columbus or Pittsburgh?

It was about the same as Columbus as far as I'm concerned.

I liked all four shows on the tour, it's just that the video quality is so bad.

I don't understand why anyone would want to see him do anything. He's a sad joke.
Now? He's pretty much worthless. But whenever his contract was coming due the last time(2015, I think?), there was a lot of talk that he was a guy who could leave WWE for TNA or ROH and run with the ball and really move numbers.
Ziggler at his very best isn't as good as an out of shape, disinterested TNA Frankie Kazarian let alone the Frankie we've been getting in ROH.

Ziggler has a much stronger body of work than Kazarian, as well as a legitimate ****+ non-gimmick Match on his resume too.

I absolutely disagree. Dolph Ziggler matches are all the same; he gets his ass kicked all match, bumps way too hard for every single spot, makes a comeback. One third of the time he wins, one third of the time he loses, one third of the time it's a **** finish. That's the only variable.

None of his offense looks good.

Ziggler is one of the most overrated workers I have ever seen.

Plethora of ***+ work against a variety including Styles, Danielson, Miz, Sheamus, Jericho, Steen, Cesaro, Alberto, Cena, Orton, Ambrose, Rollins, and HHH. Dramatic PPV peaks specifically against Miz and Alberto. Not an all-time worker that he could’ve been, but I cannot recall any critically raves singles matches for Kazarian.

If Nemerh cane in with the sane willingness to hustle as Cody, I’d expect the same if not better results. Cody is also littered with ***+ work with one singles classic to boot, but Ziggler didn’t need to work with an all-time great to reach that level of drama.

You couldn't pay me to watch any more matches involving Sheamus, the Miz, and Dolph Ziggler. I don't care about yours, Meltzer's, or anybody else's star ratings.
