ROH in Review 2016 - Day 2

Post by Wilson »

During these three days, we will look at many of the touchstones of the past calendar year in ROH, in both the tone of a fan of the product as well as integral to the larger voice of the board.

The awards below will be conducted via written response in this thread. Up to three candidates can be awarded, using a tiered scoring system, 5 Points (greatest candidate), 3 Points, and 1 Point (lowest of the three candidates). Write-ins for candidates not suggested in each category are very much encouraged. All categories are to be ROH-focused, in which work from other promotions should bear little influence. Voting in this thread will be open for one week.

I have written a short summarizing statement for each category. If this hack editorializing fails to provide clarity, then please vote to the best of one’s conscience!

I would also like to provide a special thanks to 187_Joeism, AlexROH, Big Red Machine and Brada for their help editing these categories.

Crossing the thin red line:

Biggest News

The news that created or has the potential to create the biggest set of effects or repercussions.

As a note, there have been several departures this year, all with different stories. Some are grouped together when it seems appropriate and others seemed too disparate to qualify into a grouped candidate.

- Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, and Doc Gallows become contracted to the WWE
- Cedric Alexander and ACH leave ROH to become freelance talent
- Roderick Strong leaves ROH to become contracted to the WWE
- Moose leaves ROH to become contracted to TNA
- The internal ROH team restructures; Kevin Kelly is promoted to a full-time position; Truth Martini, Jeff Jones, and George Carroll are let go
- ROH establishes a partnership with CMLL
- Marty Scurll signs to a unique opt-out contract and Will Ospreay signs to a presumably similar contact
- ROH returns to the UK during the Reach for the Sky Tour
- The Young Bucks resign with ROH and Kyle O’Reilly reaches an agreement with the company, proceeding into 2017 as champions
- First collaborative effort reached in years by ROH and TNA, which allowed Matt Hardy’s appearance at Final Battle
- Steve Corino leaves ROH to become contracted to the WWE

Best Trend

Trends that improve the product and that one would like to see more of going forward.

- ROH and NJPW progressively cross-pollinate, see: ROH World Title defenses on major shows, Honor Rising, Ishii’s TV Title win, Briscoes’s NEVER Openweight 6-Man and IWGP Tag Team Title wins, Adam Cole and Adam Page in the Bullet Club, and others
- Bringing back former ROH staples, see: Kenny Omega, Colt Cabana, Motor City Machine Guns
- Producing relatively strong live event cards even without NJPW talent
- Influx of burgeoning talent, see: Lio Rush, “Punishment” Martinez, Keith Lee & Shane Taylor
- Improved use of talent on excursion, see: Jay White, Kamaitachi
- Select ROH talent going over generally protected NJPW talent
- Negotiations to use popular British talents, see: Marty Scurll, Will Ospreay
- The impressive nominal legacy of the TV Title, see: Roderick Strong, Tomohiro Ishii, Bobby Fish, Will Ospreay, Marty Scurll
- Resigning most of their major talent under contract

Worst Trend

ROH, please stop:

- The overreliance of, and the relatively frequent subservience toward, NJPW talent on their major shows
- Lack of talent being introduced to the main event picture
- Lack of compelling storylines
- Six PPVs per twelvemonth
- Too much talent and not enough time per match for PPVs
- Goofballs on PPV, see: Cheeseburger, Toru Yano, Steve Corino, Kevin Sullivan
- Weeks of bottle episodes for ROH on SBG
- Midcard talent leave due to potential frustrations, see: Alexander and ACH in 2016, Ciampa in 2015
- The increased median age of the overall roster
- The shrinking of the ROH internal team

Worst Thing

(Bury) the worst thing.

- Insipid Kevin Kelly and Steve Corino commentary
- The generally very bad promotion and direction of the women’s division
- Nana’s foreboding envelopes which presage ominous changes of heart and are, in general, pretty foreboding—though we’re not quite sure what they are
- Steve Corino and BJ Whitmer’s infinite saga spills into 2016 and it still consumes all too much screen time, only with garnishings of Kevin Sullivan; Why, God?
- “The Greatest Rematch in ROH History”, in which Jay Briscoe challenges for the World Title despite not having wrestled a singles match in many months and not being involved in the Global Wars angle, cooling the tone of the whole product
- Kyle O’Reilly is a very uninteresting character for most of the year, and is just not presented well as a main event player, let alone a supposed World Champion
- Jay Lethal’s World Title reign spins its wheels for months at a time
- Adam Page’s character twists in the wind because of a random face turn in March and then promptly turns heel as the - Bullet Club America’s resident fall player/straw boss, “Hangman” Page
-As King, Titus, and Coleman reach career lows, they band together to form the U.S. political parody, The Cabinet, as a vow to make wrestling great again; it’s as bad as it sounds
-Hail Hendrix vignettes display the very worst of the ROH’s production and creative efforts, employing chintzy effects, incoherent storytelling, and ultimately tying into another stinker of a story

(Secretly the Best)

(In which one votes for their boy.)

- Beer City Bruiser
- Caprice Coleman
- Christopher Daniels
- Ian Riccaboni
- Jonathan Gresham
- Keith Lee
- Matt Taven
- Silas Young
- Boozar Mucan
