Patreon Ep. #65: The Genesis of Ring of Honor
It’s February, and you know what that means: The 20th anniversary of Ring of Honor’s first show! With that in mind, there’s no better time to take a look at the birth of the first modern super indie, a decade after the TWA closed and almost a decade before Sinclair Broadcast Group bought ROH and made it corporate. Topics include RF Video’s search for an ECW replacement product to sell, how Rob Feinstein’s less than stellar reputation shaped perception of ROH, just how important Homicide and the NYC indie scene were to ROH, why exactly it was APW King of the Indies 2001 that helped cement that an RF Video super indie was possible, the attempts to present ROH as different from and superior to “indie wrestling,” RF Video’s transition to shooting every indie show with two cameras and commentary lasting exactly one show, precisely why the handling of the Christopher Street Connection on the first show landed so badly (and it goes deeper than the obvious parts), Kris and David realize why Michael Shane got such a bad rap, Nick Bockwinkel’s love of Bryan Danielson, how Low-Ki doesn’t get enough credit for ROH being made in his image, and much, MUCH more.

This is a great show that’s a nice change of pace from most of the previous Patreon shows, and not just because of the subject matter: Not only did we use all of the Observer coverage, but we relied heavily on the columns and news updates from the old RF Video website, something that we’ve only sourced before on the MECW shows. Enjoy!
