ROH Honor vs. Evil Review

Post by DXvsNWO1994 »

Just got done watching it here's a quick review

Honor vs. Evil
Cincinnati, Ohio 2/16/13

1.) "God's Gift" QT Marshall vs. Jay Briscoe: **3/4-***

Definitely Marshall's best ROH outing to date

2.) Tadarius Thomas vs. Jay Lethal: ***1/2

I think this was the best ROH match Thomas has had to date

3.) "Spyder" Nate Webb vs. Mark Briscoe: ***

Fun little match

4.) ACH vs. Roderick Strong: ****

This match was KILLER!!! ACH looked great against Strong and was really over!!

Truth Martini's Hoopla Uncut Segment was good. Martini was gold as usual and had some nice Hoopla Hotties with him (The red-head was definitely the better looking of the two). He brings out Cole & talks about
Spoiler: show
Matt Taven's Title Shot on March 2nd on iPPV via his Top Prospect Tournament Win
and the segment ends with Cole Superkicking Martini

5.) "The Outlaw" Charlie Haas vs. Pepper Parks: **1/2

Actually not too bad. Better than the match Haas had with Titus in Milwaukee imo

6.) Kyle O'Reilly vs. BJ Whitmer: ***3/4

Very good match both guys look good.

7.) Six Man Elimination War - ROH All-Stars (World TV Champion Adam Cole, Davey Richards & "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin) vs. S.C.U.M. (World Champion Kevin Steen, Jimmy Jacobs & Steve Corino): ****-****1/4

Very good match but idk I felt like it was underwhelming at various points. The ending was kind of flat.

Overall: 8.0/10

I'd say it was another great live event in 2013 for ROH but slightly off The Hunt For Gold & Defy or Deny II in my opinion. Part of that was because the main event was a tad underwhelming.

Main event was ****-****1/4 and you thought it was underwhelming? How high were your expectations for it?

Don't get me wrong the match was good and had it's moments and is deserving of being in the **** range but these kinds of matches are usually extremely good (like the Northern Aggression 8-Man Tag). This was very good but didn't have anything special or stand out in my mind. Essentially....Great Match but I just never hit that High Gear or stride that I thought it would (Very Good but nothing memorable). I expected it to be ****1/2 or something like that going in but for me it was only about **** (In fact I think that's going to be my final rating for that match, ****).

Sorry if there was any confusion on that

It probably was Tadarius' best performance, but at the same time he still was off target with a couple kicks and how he managed to do a back bump while taking the Lethal Injection, I have no idea.

Maybe he thought Lethal was going for the elbow variation, but it was still really awkward.

1. QT Marshall vs Jay Briscoe: ***
Good opener, i miss seeing Jay Briscoe on singles, he always works well the crowd and put his opponent over in the proccess.

2. Tadarius Thomas vs Jay Lethal: ***1/2
Really good match, i am not surprise that TD has had his best match against Lethal because he is a great worker, only bad thing in the match were some awkward spots from TD but it didn´t anything from the match.

3.Nate Webb vs. Mark Briscoe: **
Fun comedy match with Mark and Nate doing crazy stuff.

4. ACH vs Roderick Strong: ****
Great match here, let tore the house down, Roddy always work well against highflyers and ACH continues to impress and get himself over really quickly, second match on the card IMO.

Truth Martini´s hoopla was really funny, and build the TV Title match for the 11th Anniversary.

5. Charlie Haas vs Pepper Parks: **1/2
Decent match here, Parks looked better than i expected and Charlie is always super over with the crowd.

6. Kyle O'Reilly vs BJ Whitmer: ****
Great match here, both are having a great year with really good performances and told a good history with the hometown here overcoming his injures and fighting the submission specialist.

7. Six Man Elimination War: Adam Cole, Davey Richards & Michael Elgin) vs Kevin Steen, Jimmy Jacobs & Steve Corino: ****1/4
Really good ME, Elgin and Steen looked great in the match and is a good way to build a match between them in the future, the only problem i have with the match was that Cole get hurt and not being more importance in the match but stuff happen, i don´t mind the finish because it helps Elgin to look better.

Another good show from ROH to keep the year up, looking foward to the Anniversary.

Just to clarify my comments/rating on the main event, I really thought going into it that this had the change to challenge the Defy or Deny Match as the best ROH match of 2013 thus far. In my view it was still very good but it fell a little short of my expectations (hence me giving it ****)

To give a perspective of what I mean, here's where I'd rank that match compared to the other top matches this year:

1.) Defy or Deny: ****1/2
2.) Richards vs. O'Reilly: ****1/4
3.) Briscoes vs. Wolves: ****1/4
4.) Jacobs vs. Cole: ****
5.) Six-Man War: ****
6.) Strong vs. ACH: ****

Very, very enjoyable show. Match quality not as great as Defy of Deny II but the show as a whole ran smoother and I thought the main event was a belter, Im a huge mark for multi-man tag matches especially heels vs faces and I hope we see more of them in the future because ROH do them well and they have a decent roster right now to vary it up a bit.

ACH-Strong was better than I expected, ACH is a real talent.

QT Marshall needs to learn from Haas when it comes to heeling it up, even Mike Bennett could teach him a thing or two. Marshall just sucks and defines 'go away heat'.

Crowd were great all show and nice looking venue, hope ROH return there again soon.

Martini's segment was great and I love the red-headed girl too, she needs to become HOT's resident hotty.

What was the deal with someone running in at the end of the show?

1. QT Marshall vs Jay Briscoe: **1/2
Fun opener, crowd was hot for Jay and Marshall had good heat. Glad it wasn't very long.

2. Tadarius Thomas vs Jay Lethal: ***1/4
Man the match has had some sick sequences. The match was much better than I thought. If the last minutes were better and less sloppy the rating could've been higher.

3.Nate Webb vs. Mark Briscoe: **
Meh. Webb looked out of shape and I really don't understand why they brought him. I mean, he's not even from Cincinnati. Mark carried this match and thanks god he's so over.

4. ACH vs Roderick Strong: ****1/4
What a match. ACH was fantastic here and it was the best match Strong had in ROH since the match with Edwards. This match was worth the price alone, hopefully they'll have a rematch soon.

Truth Martini's Hoopla was great. His new theme song is just ridiculous

5. Charlie Haas vs Pepper Parks: *1/2
I don't get it. Why Haas' matches are soo long??? boring match that dragged like hell. Finish was horrible.

6. Kyle O'Reilly vs BJ Whitmer: ***1/4
Good match but I really didn't thought it was that good. Maybe it's just me.

7. Six Man Elimination War: Adam Cole, Davey Richards & Michael Elgin) vs Kevin Steen, Jimmy Jacobs & Steve Corino: ****
Great match and great Main Event, I actually liked the finish. Elgin looked great here and so did Cole. Loved Jacobs and Corino work here, the ten dollar punch is awesome, so old-school lol. If Steen retains his next big match will be against Elgin where I believe Elgin will win the belt. Like Classic-Cabana, I'm a big fan of multi-man tag matches so I wish we'll get more of SCUM vs ROH big stars matches (but w/ Rhino or the new member).

Overall: 7.75, not as good as DOD and HFG but still a show with two **** matches and another above *** is very good for me. The best Faburay show I remember anyway.

After seeing that match, I'm a bit disappointed ACH won't be at the Anniversary show...but on the other hand I don't want the key matches to be cut short like they were at Final Battle (Elgin/Strong, Wolves/reDRagon), so maybe it's a good thing after all.
I'd love to see a rematch between those two at the Supercard though!

The red-headed girl was Scarlett Bordeaux who will be in the Women of Honor four-way match at the TV tapings.

Sounds like ACH is a guy to watch. Can anyone recommend some other matches with him?

This was definitely a good show, but not very consistent. 4/7 matches went under *** imo, which for ROH is pretty bad. However, the Strong-ACH match and the main event were both very good, so kind of made up for it.

The crowd was weird for this one. They were loud for the spots but apart from that they were pretty much silent. This hurt the show a little. They were worse for some matches than others, for example BJ vs. Kyle really got hurt by this in my opinion.

Review for Honor vs. EVIL

Kelly and Nigel on commentary

Bonus Match from National Wrestling Day: World Tag Team Title Match: Briscoes (c) vs. Steve Corino & Jimmy Jacobs

Brief as in about 7 minutes, but enjoyable with Briscoes winning. **1/2

Main Show:

QT Marshall vs. Jay Briscoe

You know a crowd is how when they get excited about a QT match. Not bad. Not good. Just there. Jay wins.

**3/4

Jay Lethal vs. Tadarius Thomas

Very nice one. The guys really click. Lethal is one of those guys whose style can blend in with anyone, which is a very underrated attribute of his. Lethal wins after a good match.

***1/4

Mark Briscoe vs. Spyder Nate Webb

Aside from some humor at the start Webb looks awful. Mark wins.

**1/4

Roderick Strong vs. ACH

And this sort of thing is why they needed to hire ACH. He's allowed to bust out his offensive moves and show what he's got, as well as taking a good beating from Roddy. But ACH made the real impression here.

***3/4 and nearly 4

Charlie Haas vs. Pepper Parks

Haas looks slow and sloppy as hell, and takes too long to do it.

**

Kyle O'Reilly vs. BJ Whitmer

Kyle puts on a real wrestling clinic in a 20 minute match, but it's the hometown guy who comes up with the win.

***1/2

Six Man Elimination Match: Team Honor (Davey Richards, Michael Elign, & TV Champion Adam Cole) vs. S.C.U.M. (World Champion Kevin Steen & Jimmy Jacobs & Steve Corino)

Team Honor works well considering they never teamed together. SCUM has and also looks good. While the match never goes over the top, they turn in a really good match for 40 minutes in which there was never a slow moment, except when Cole had to be 'helped to the back due to injury'. Of course he returned later. In any event first elimination doesn't occur until 25 minutes in. After Richards and then Cole go down, Elgin eliminates Corino and Jacobs within seconds of one another, only to eventually fall to Steen

***3/4 and nearly 4 as well, but for different reasons from Roddy ACH. But it's really worth watching as they work the match really well.

Overall rating: ***1/2. The bad on the card is bad. The good on the card good. There was just nothing must see on it. Worth owning at the right price
