Wrestling Promotions affected by Youtube Restricted Mode

Post by cgstong »

Some big stuff going on as Youtube has made it so that wrestling channels are no longer receiving funds if their channels are under the restricted category.

This sounds really awful. Especially that bit about AIW needing to sell hundreds more DVDs per month to make up the revenue difference. I'll send your link around to some friends, raise some awareness. This is bad news for all wrestling fans regardless of promotion.

Beyond is incredibly lucky that it's subscription service isn't affected that really would be a killer blow to them, It's also surprising on how much AIW need to make regarding DVD sales, I wouldn't have expected such a return from free Youtube content.

There could be changes in which talent promotions book due to booking fee's as I can't imagine it's easy to keep such high level guys on a low budget especially now that money has been cut from uner them. Wrestlers might also have to make changes, if they want to keep their booking ratio high then I imagine they are going have to make cuts in their booking fees. Overall If indie wrestling wants to succeed as a whole then it's going to have to band together now and hopefully create something that is unified and strong.

It may well allow ROH and Impact to take advantage of this situation as wrestlers may well see guranteed contracts as the best option especially if companies cannot regurlarly keep booking them.

Woman of Honor could obviously be heavily affected but I imagine ROH can handle supplying the content without much worry about earning money from it's content.

I don't know how many other video hosting sites there are out there (if there are any at all) especially compared to YouTube but if a company is smart and is very aware of what is happening they will notice they could actually grow heavily through the content that is being comprimised by what YouTube has done.

Oh no, these promotions (ROH included) won't be able to monetize women's matches that people clearly were watching for the great in-ring action and deep storytelling.

Not entirely sure why what motivates someone to watch wrestling matters.

Why even bother responding to a post like that? Clearly he doesn't care that this may well kill some indie promotions.

@cgstong

It sure seems to matter enough to Google and advertisers though and that's what counts here. It's almost like advertisers don't want to be associated with content that's a substitute for porn in some parts of the world and odd fetishes in general (intergender and women's wrestling).

I mean, the first Beyond video on Youtube that doesn't involve a woman is Joey Ryan being a sleazeball, then another one, then finally a Busick vs. Thatcher match posted almost three years ago at about 120k views. Same thing with AIW with the first video being Buff Bagwell doing a canadian destroyer, then some AR Fox vs. Uhaa Nation match posted four years ago with 45k views.

So no, I don't feel bad for those promotions eating shit because they banked on some fad that wasn't going to last and I certainly don't blame Google for pulling the plug.

@Thelone

That's a weird stance to take given that it's subjective. You're saying that it is somehow morally objectionable to watch something that is a substitute for porn (based on the premise that porn is bad in the first place) and yet also trying to defend the idea that you're watching simulated violence which you deem better in some way.

I'm not telling you to feel bad, I'm saying that's an odd stance to take because it's hypocritical in nature.

Also want to say don't worry about defending it. I don't think you're wrong and don't care if you think I'm wrong either. It's subjective in nature and you have full right to feel the way you do. Just want you to know it's cool.
